Describe the problem you’re having:
I’ve subscribed to Dilbert.com and I’m using the af_comics plugin. This setup is working fine, but is sometimes returning something completely different:

“VMware Products released” is some other feed I have subscribed to but for a reason I don’t understand, af_comics get’s this mixed up every few days and returns the wrong output.

Running a feed debug on this, returns the following output:

that’s certainly interesting, but i have no clue what could cause this. feed data is cached locally, maybe there’s a filename collision there? seems unlikely though.

do you have a transparent caching proxy or something on your network?

it would help if you captured the misbehaving update somehow but i’m not sure if its realistic if this happens intermittently.

note local cache filenames in feed debugger for both feeds, and try updating both in feed debugger in rapid succession.

I can see two seperat xml files in my tt-rss/cache/feeds dictionary. Both are getting updated correctly.

No, the docker instance is connecting diretcly without any proxy to the Internet.

I’ve tried this but unfortunately without any luck so far. But I’ve noticed something during this:

The other feed that collides with Dilbert is this one: VMware Product Release Tracker (vTracker) | virten.net (RSS link at the top, feed content below).

  • This feed subscription didn’t get any updates since Dezember, although according the the original feed there have been many updates since.

    If I compare this with the list on their website: Dilbert is only working, when there hasn’t been a VMware update on that day :grin:

Is there something wrong with Virten’s RSS feed? It looks good to me, but maybe something is wrong?

it’s a guid collision. this would also explain the other feed not getting updates. tt-rss considers article IDs globally unique.

yes, they should use more unique identifier for their articles. same goes for dilbert feed.

tbh i’m not sure how much of a valid use-case is left for globally (well, within tt-rss) unique article IDs.

originally this was done with planet-whatever (i.e. planet debian) blog aggregators in mind so if you’re subscribed to a few of those you won’t have duplicates because they were pulling from an overlapping set of blogs without doing any id rewriting. anyone still reads those? do they exist? i have no idea.

in my opinion at this point it would be more practical to consider all article ids unique within their originating feed only, this way feeds with badly designed IDs won’t be able to break each other.

tt-rss guid object would have to be extended with a feed id so data_migration import/export would work properly.

e: a global configuration knob could keep previous behavior for people who need it.
